Fashion and Streetwear in Bali

Bali has long been known for having a creative aura. Artist, designers, and photographers all come to Bali to work, to think, and to get new ideas. This has made Bali the center for fashion and streetwear design in Southeast Asia, pulling designers from all over the world to come and create.

So what makes Bali such a creative place?

First of all, Bali has an incredibly rich culture. Much started back in the 1300s, when the mighty Majapahit kingdom reigned on the island of Java. It was the last great empire of the region, and is considered the most powerful empire in the history of Indonesia. Without going too much in depth on this empire, Majapahit was characteristic for having amazing geometric architecture, and art was flourishing in the period, lead by creations of animal and human figurines, jars, vessels, decorative tiles etc.
The end of the Majapahit kingdom was filled with battles for power, and when the final battle was lost to the Sultanate of Demak in 1527 a large number of Majapahit's artisans, priests, courtiers, and members of the royalty moved east to Bali.

The rich, vivid and festive Balinese culture is considered the legacy of the Majapahit kingdom. Bali has an unprecedented number of skilled tailors, artists, handicraftsmen, and artists. The creative powers of Bali have attracted artists from the western world for centuries already.

And now the new generation is here! Fashion, streetwear, and jewelry designers from all over the world are based in Bali. Major labels like SkingraftReligion, This Is A Love Song, and many more are doing their designing and production in Bali. They are all contributing to the continuation of the development of a collective creative culture in the island, that fashion designers from all over the world have come to love.

There are also a lot of Indonesian labels and designers based in Bali, many of them making great headway in international markets.

The Balinese culture is mysterious and amazing, and the island itself almost seem to have powers on its own. It is an amazing place to live and work, and hopefully the Balinese culture will keep going on despite all the western influence!"
